What are they singing in Llama?

There seems to be some consensus that the words are "Leave it on press, depress, depress. Llama taboot taboot." The CD jacket for Picture of Nectar includes the lyrics "llama, taboot, taboot", but the rest is unclear, and there is dispute:

  • To note, it could be "taboot" or "to boot" or "t'boot".
  • It could be "leapin' on"
  • or even "living off grass with a craze to graze."
  • Or maybe it's "livin on prayers".
  • It has also been suggested (perhaps not seriously) that its "leaving off fred's best threads."
  • Kevin Flinn suggests "Living oppressed, oppressed, oppressed, llama taboot taboot."
  • Someone else insists the words are "Leavin our best abreast, abreast,"
  • Another says its "Even I'm pressed to dress the best."
  • "hempphreak" reports that "the actual lyrics are without a doubt 'livin on the best, the best of friends, llama taboot taboot.'
  • LKtnns (11/26/95) said "Call me crazy but ... the way we've known it" is "Livin on fith's pass the grass Llama to boot to boot.'
  • "CassidyBob@aol.com (12/20/95) says its "Blam it on friends, the best of friends, Llama, Taboot! Taboot!"
  • Kristin Truitt emailed (5/10/97) that they're saying "Livin on Pez and Pez Perez, Llama taboot taboot!"
  • Zac Schwarzbach said "Living on pez, depress depress".
  • Andrew Purrott emailed (10/31/98), "Regarding the lyrics to Llama; I'd like to add my pennies worth. I think they are saying, 'leavin' our friends, best friends, llama to boot to boot.' Taking into consideration that Llama describes a post Wilson era battle in Gamehendge between Errand Wolfe; his army and Colonel Forbin and his army it makes sense that warriors would have to abandon their friends to win the battle. Leavin' our friends!"
  • Bradly Bifulco also raised (11/10/98) a Gamehendge connection: "hey, i was reading about what people think Phish says during llama (the chorus) and i was thinking that everybody has missed the most obvious explanation of all - if you read the lyrics in Nectar, it talks about how the llama that the mercenary was riding carries bags of blastopast (a highly explosive material that could wipe out an entire hillside). now, wouldn't it make sense that the words say something like this: "something something blast, blastopast, llama taboot taboot" i don't tknow what the something something is (maybe he says "livin on blast, blastopast" or something like that) but i'm fairly certain that they would say blastopast seeing as how that's what he's got strapped to the llama and it just makles sense. i can't believe no one suggested it earlier."
  • Mark Williams suggested "living oppressed, repressed, depressed"

Note that "lama" means "why" in Hebrew.

Thanks also to David Herman (date?) and Claire Conrad (5/9/03).

"Jamming is definitely the most important thing for me ... all I really care about is going on these musical journeys.""
