In what side projects are the members involved

In addition to playing in Phish, the four members have various performance side projects, either of their own invention or in which they take frequent and/or significant part, including (in alphabetical order, as they are below): Bad Hat (and, related, Jazz Mandolin Project and Gordon Stone Trio), the Drop Caps, Dude of Life, New YorkSpastic, J. Willis Pratt, Pork Tornado, and Surrender to the Air. Additionally, Trey has started solo outings.

Page had a non-performance-but-musical side project, a movie score. See also: co-bills, guest appearances, featured guests, and nonmusical projects.

Bad Hat: Trey and Jon (on guitar and drums, respectively) played with Jamie Masefield and Stacey Starkwhether (mandolin and bass, respectively, from Jazz Mandolin Project) as Bad Hat (pictures) for two tours (Jan./Feb. and Sept. 1994). Their show program said, "Bad Hat is the quietest band in the world! They challenge anyone to play quieter."

Drop Caps: Mike Gordon and Gordon Stone formed Mike and the Drop Caps (Greg DeGuglielmo - drums, Mike Gordon - bass, Scott Murawski - guitar and Gordon Stone - banjo) for the Ann Arbor Folk Fest in the winter of '96/'97 (esp. 1/25/97). Gordon Stone also performed on Rift, as well as in the Gordon Stone Trio. The Drop Caps also features Scott Murawski (Max Creek's guitarist) and Greg De Guglielmo ("Max Creek's ex-drummer, once removed", according to Joe Rioux <jtr@vm.mv.com>.) They performed, e.g., 1/25/97.

Dude of Life: Jon plays in the Dude of Life's band, which toured in early 1994. Phish appeared on the Dude's Crimes of the Mind disc.

Gordon ' Trio: Mike has played banjo and bass with Jamie Masefield and Gordon Stone as the original Gordon Stone Trio (which has also featured Dave Grippo, of Belizbeha, Cosmic Krewe, and Giant Country Horns), particularly in early- to mid-1995 dates at a Burlington Thai restaurant. Gordon Stone Trio, who were featured as a tent act at the Great Went, now consists of Stone, . Fishman guested with GST 9-20-97.

Jazz Mandolin Project: The Jazz Mandolin Project had been a somewhat revolving group of players, which had (prior to 1998) always featured Jamie Masefield on mandolin and Stacey Starkweather (also of the Cosmic Krewe) on bass, but has also occasionally* featured Trey and Fishman. (Some insist that JMP dates featuring Trey and Jon are really Bad Hat, not JMP.) Bad Hat was something of an interim act initially, and JMP has continued, and seemed to many to finalize as a trio with Gabe Jarrett on drums; but in 1998 it was dissolved and reborn: a January/February tour will have Jon Fishman on drums and Chris Dahlgreen on bass. Jamie and Stacie also played in the Mandolinquents (with Doug Perkins on guitar) and with The Gordon Stone Trio, both also Burlington bands. *One particularly memorable Masefield/Starkwhether/Anastasio/Fishman show was 1/24/96 at Christ Church on UVM's Redstone campus, a benefit to inaugurate Carmel's Coffee House, a series of gigs to be held that spring in memory of Carmel Musco Anastasio, Trey's paternal grandmother. Fishman tours in January/February 1998 as drummer for the revised Jazz Mandolin Project's "Tour de Flux".

J. Willis Pratt: Fishman met Willis (as he is known) at Goddard College, and the two have been playing together (off and on, mostly off; first at the Haybarn Theater at Goddard) since. Fishman (credited as "Zerg-Man") co-produced and played drums (and screamed) on Willis' first album, Lost Paradox (which also featured Timberhole Rogers, Russel Flanagan, Dan Archer, and Aaron Hersy). The tape, which has received mixed reviews (at best), has been available via Phish's official merchandise (now Dry Goods) since February 1993. ... Fishman played drums with Willis again in May 1997, and supported Willis' second release, Bleeding in a Shark's Tank. ... Willis (b.1962) is described as a well-haired metalish guy, who says he once played with Quiet Riot, claims to have given Fishman the Henrietta nickname, and describes his music as "punk-metal". Willis and his trio, We're Bionic (with whom he has a second album, Bleeding in a Shark's Tank), were the surprise opener for Phish 12-13-97 in Albany, where Fishman introduced Willis (who has written over 60 songs and recorded over 30 of them) as "one of the greatest and most prolific songwriters in the world". Willis' two releases are still available (for $7 and $10, respectively) directly from J. Willis Pratt, P.O. Box 204, Plainfield, VT 05667. (Thanks also to Yorgos El Guapo <jordy@istar.ca>, M. Williams <mattheww@earth.goddard.edu>, and Shelly.)

New York: On 5/21/97 at Club Toast in Burlington, NY, the one-time side project New York debuted, featuring Trey (guitar, vocals) and Mike (bass, vocals) of Phish; James Harvey (drums, keyboards, trombone, vocals) of the Cosmic Krewe (); and Paul "Pistol Stamen" Jaffee (guitar, vocals) and Tom "Tommy Law" Lawson (keyboards, guitar, drums, vocals) of the Pants. The setlist (Never, Headache, Porky's Dad, Dirt, Big Bird, Only Shallow, Noise of Carpet, Not the One, Saw it Again, Melody, Stand, Izabella!, 2000; Enc: Hello Violence, New York Groove, closing Jam with Page McConnell) debuted a few new Phish tunes that Phish hadn't played ("Dirt" and "Saw it Again", plus the Hendrix cover "Izabella") plus some Pants songs, and covers of Frank Black, My Bloody Valentine, Stereo Lab, Sly and the Family Stone, and some local bands. The full setlist was as follows: Never too late to Spend (Pants song), Headache, Porky's dad, Dirt (new for this gig; Phish has played it since), Big Bird (Pants), Only Shallow (My Bloody Valentine), Noise of Carpet, Not the One, I Saw it again (new Trey tune; now played by Phish), Melody, Stand (with horn), Izabella (Hendrix original, with Page; now played by Phish), Hello Violence, 2000 (Mike and Pants Keys player on vox; not "2001"); Encores: , , New York Groove (Kiss), and impromptu blues jam (with Page). Pete Gershon <PGershon@aol.com> noted, "Tom Cleary is the brother of former Pants drummer Neil Cleary. Tom Cleary does play keyboards in a local jazz trio called the Genius Magnets, but he's never been a member of the Pants.") The Pants covered "Golgi Appartus" on the Burlington Does Burlington release.

Pork Tornado: Christopher P. Pieretti (<cpierett@moose.uvm.edu>) also mentioned (10/5/95) Pork Tornado as a Burlington-based Fishman side project, also featuring James Harvey on trombone. For example, 4-15-96 Club Toast Burlington, VT. Trey and James Harvey sat in with Pork Tornado at Club Toast 10/19/97, according to Kevin <kmonty@smcvt.edu>.

Spastic: Fishman sometimes plays drums with Spastic, with Martin Guigui (former producer of yeP!) on keyboards, plus a bassist and guitarist.

Surrender to the Air: Trey organized Surrender to the Air, a "free jazz" collaboration of eleven well-known musicians that became a disc and two live performances, and is gossiped to be regroupable.

Trey Solo:

  • Trey played his first solo gig (billed as "Very Special Arts of Vermont") February 15, 1999, at Higher Ground in Winooksi, VT. The setlist was as follows thanks to David Ginsberg <dginsberg@the-ark.com>:

  • A second was 2/22/99 at Carnegie Hall in New York City in a benefit for Tibet House, on a bill also including Michael Stipe, Phillip Glass, Shawn Colvin, Cibo Matto, Patti Smith, and others. Trey performed three songs (Brian and Robert, with Tibetan flute player Nawang Khechog and African stringed-instrumentalist Foday Suso; Dirt, solo; and Billy Breathes, with Peter Kater on piano), and also played a duo with Philip Glass and participated in the finale with Patti Smith's band. "Phish is like the NAFTA of the rock'n'roll business. They show how hard work and constant touring can really pay off. But besides just promoting business and commerce, they are like four classical musicians playing modern rock'n'roll. There's nothing they can't do." -- John Popper, Blue Screen Show interview with Brian Lipman, 5/13/94
