A Welcome to Newcomers Monday, 18-Nov-2002 06:31:29 EST

There are a few different ways to get involved in Phish discussion on the Internet.

The first, and probably easiest, is to subscribe to the Usenet Newsgroup rec.music.phish. If you don't know how to do this please contact technical support or the help desk at your site.

It's generally recommended that you "lurk" (read, and not post) for a little while so you can get the hang of how things work. Remember that the Phish.Net is what we fans make it, and the more high-quality discussion we generate, the better the Phish.Net will be!

Some recommendations:

Currently the following mailing lists offer different aspects of Phish discussion:

Phish-News

The phish-news list seeks to improve upon and increase the content from the phish-info list, as well as bring it more up-to-date. While phish-info primarily includes/included only setlists and official tour announcements, Phish news will point you to all Phish happenings: the latest setlists, tour news, band happenings, and major online developments (as well as guest appearances with other bands, side projects, Mail Order developments, special hockey events, non-musical Phish news, etc.). You will not miss anything that is sent to phish-info, as all will be covered on Phish-News. That said, we will keep the messages to a minimum -- keeping you informed but not flooding your email box.

People who want to keep up-to-date with Phish events subscribe to this list even if they read the Phish.Net via Usenet.

Phish-Info

NOTE: In a message posted to phish-info list on Wednesday June 23, 1999, Shelly Culbertson announced the retirement of the phish-info list and suggested that people subscribe to the phish-news list which was recently developed (Thursday April 29, 1999) to meet similar needs.

The phish-info list was a moderated mailing list which sent announcements concerning hotline messages, breaking news, and setlists directly into your email box.

Benjy's Digest

Benjy's Digest is a low-volume, high content subset of the rec.music.phish newsgroup. It is a direct derivative of Rosemary's Digest, and the only reason for the name change is to reflect the change of the people behind it. Benjy hand picks articles from rec.music.phish which are then sent out via email in digest form. All replies go back to rec.music.phish so they can be read by veryone.

Rosemary's Digest

NOTE: In a message posted to the Phish.Net on Monday September 8, 1997, Rosemary announced her decision to stop producing Rosemary's Digest. To learn more or Rosemary's decision, please read her announcement.

Rosemary's Digest was a low-volume, high content subset of the Phish.Net, made available for those who didn't have the time or energy to read hundreds of articles every day. Rosemary hand picked articles from rec.music.phish which were then sent out via email in digest form. All replies went back to rec.music.phish so they could be read by everyone.

Phish-Women

The Phish-Women list is a list created to allow women interested in the music of Phish to meet and communicate with one another. The hope of this list is that it will be a place where you can find travel companions, find information on cities where Phish plays, share information on women's health issues, develop the confidence to post actively to the Usenet newsgroup rec.music.phish, and of course acquire tapes and talk about music. Participants of the list are encouraged to cross-post articles with Phish-related music content to rmp@archive.phish.net (the e-mail to Usenet gateway) so that all members of the Phish-loving electronic community can benefit from your thoughts.

Digiphish

The Digital Phish Mailing List, or Digi-Phish, was created to discuss the digital taping and trading of Phish shows. Complete information is available at the Digi-Phish web site at http://www.bhm.tis.net/~rob/Digi-Phish.html.

NOTE:Digi-Phish is *not* a forum for trading or seeking analog ("regular", not digital, cassette) tapes -- including D>A grovels, asking newbie questions, or anything other than trading Phish DAT tapes or seeking tapers tickets. Please do not subscribe to Digi-Phish unless you intend to participate within the established guidelines.

An archive exists of the Phish Digest, the original Phish mailing list which is no longer in existance. We are currently working to make these archives more readily accessible. A similar archive exists for Benjy's Digest and can be found at http://archive.phish.net/lsv-archive/benjys-digest/ and the Phunky Bitches are currently offering "The Best of the PB", an archive of the best posts to the Phish-Women mailing list. We hope to some day offer a similar archive of Rosemary's Digest.
